Dry cutting takes place when the stylist cuts the hair when it is dry, and in its natural state. While it has been around for a while, dry cutting is a technique that is becoming increasingly more popular, especially in the past few years.
A true dry cut is not taught in the cosmetology schools or textbooks. It is merely touched upon as a suggestion to do a little dry cutting after a traditional wash, wet cut, and blow-dry. This finishing touch is more of a saving grace when doing wet cuts, because you can quickly clean up the pieces that were missed. Dry cutting at the end for two minutes is a quick attempt to fix problems that were not taken into account when the hair was cut wet. This is very different from a true dry cut.
My personal definition of a dry cut is when you dry cut your client’s hair in its true organic state from beginning to end, no water necessary. I’ve seen various approaches to dry cutting. A dry cut can take place as soon as your client sits in the chair (before washing), or after you’ve washed and dried the hair. My approach to dry cutting is a little different, and I have not seen many stylists work this way. I ask my client to come in with hair freshly washed, and air dried. This way, my client’s hair has not been pulled or stretched from a brush, dryer, or iron. This allows me to see all problem areas. Instead of spending time washing and drying the hair, I can do a thorough consultation and cut. I can spend the entire time sculpting and detailing, which results in an easy-to-style and lasting cut. The more details added, and problem areas addressed (which involves time), can be the difference between a good cut, and a phenomenal cut.
